In September, 2015, Jeff and I plan to walk the Pieterpad. This is a long distance walk in the Netherlands (LAW 9) that stretches almost 500 km from Pieterburen at the top of Groningen to the St. Pietersberg just south of Maastricht in Limburg. Ever since completing the French Camino in Spain in June, 2014 we have thought about doing something like that again. But this time it will be somewhat shorter as well as much flatter. No mountain ranges to cross. We were both born in Holland. Jeff in Stadskanaal, Groningen and myself in Bussum, North Holland. We immigrated to Canada in 1956 and 1954, respectively. What fun to come back later in life to walk through the country of our birth! We are anticipating it to be fairly easy but may be in for a surprise. Holland does have its share of rainy, windy days. We will keep our fingers crossed for good weather.
I am looking forward to visiting quaint little villages as well as sampling Dutch delicacies such as apple tart, croquettes, sole from the North Sea as well as any kind of Dutch Cheese. And hopefully we will find some poffertjes (little pancakes) somewhere on our journey. Jeff can speak a little Gronings and I can manage some Dutch. However, English is virtually a second language in Holland so there should not be a communication problem. We are excited and doing a very long walk now and then to get ready for this.
Sounds like fun, especially the part about croquettes and poffertjes and Dutch cheese! Wish we were joining you!
ReplyDeleteYes! No fair....we want to come
ReplyDeleteHave fun! I'll travel along vicariously...
ReplyDeleteEat pickled herring in every village and you'll be just fine. Better yet, eat the raw herring with onions.
